Site Visit: Pittsburgh Glass Center

Gateway High School students attended Pittsburgh Glass Center for a demonstration of how the artists work as a team to create unique designs made of blown glass. They received a narrated glassblowing and flameworking demonstration with an experienced artist and a brief education on Pittsburgh’s incredibly rich glass making history. The students participated in a tour of the 4 studios, which include the kiln shop, hot shop, flame shop, and cold shop. In the hot shop, the students were given the opportunity to work with some of the local artists to transform molten glass of their favorite colors into a stunning paperweight. The students learned how to pull the molten material to create a beautiful and unique swirl inside their own piece of artwork made from glass.
